Description

Done in 2004, tells a (relatively short) tale set in a interesting environment. Everyone's heard of Ypres and the Flanders Fields, this takes place in the short piece of lines north of Ypres, near the coast and the English Channel. As the tiny, yet brave Belgian army was forced to retreat it was here were they fought throughout the rest of the war. Area was flooded to prevent the Germans from advancing, as I explain in the beginning.
There were also French naval soldiers, fusiliers marins, present fighting as infantry. Why I wanted to portay them, I'm not sure, but I do remember seeing some interesting paintings and illustrations of fighting in the often forgotten Yser-front. The idea for the soldier stealing from the dead came after reading a Finnish short story about a soldier doing the same thing and getting killed. In the story his death was due an accident, not enemy action.
There's something quite interesting I find in witnessing the same event from the French, the Belgian and German point of view.
By the way, the aircraft seen flying in one panel is a French Blériot XI reconnaissance monoplane. Just in case you're wondering.
