Kaiju: Kingu Gidora by tuomaskoivurinne Kaiju: Kingu Gidora by tuomaskoivurinne
ink 2011,
moving along with Japanese monsters. This time, it's King Ghidorah the three-headed flying dude resembling an oriental dragon. With three heads. Three.
I noticed that my depiction turns out to be (maybe more realistic in animal anatomy-wise) little less scary than the original. I guess it's due the reduced size of the wings (atleast when they are folded, original monster didn't do that at all).
Also I had to come up with something more reasonable than two separate tails. Three separate heads was a tough puzzle on its own. Three heads. Seriously.

Based on the original monster by Toho Studios.

Always was my favorite kaiju. Interesting rendition, certainly different from normal. I like the dual tail idea.

Well, I just about shat myself to death. When it comes to monsters, that little bit of plausibility adds a lot to their "Oh shit" factor for me. If it's clearly impossible, then it's a fairytale. If it's plausible-looking, then oh shit, what if it's real. Fuckin' two-headed deer in the Zone around Chernobyl and all that shit, now Fukujima blew up... only a matter of time until we get freak-mutant komodo dragons with multiple heads that run like a Kenyan.

Well, we can guess what really caused the Fukujima-incident ;)

I have considered every Toho kaiju. Destroyah has many forms, and is another difficult subject, but we'll see...

I'm really impressed you managed to make this anatomically correct considering that it really oughtn't be. Three heads is a bit gratuitous.

I think that there are some monsters that you can't really redesign in a realistic manner without losing what makes them interesting or frightening. Sadly, because I've been struggling with this as well, I'm starting to think Ghidorah is one of them. Maybe the answer is to instead go for a kind of lovecraftian, surreal take? Something that is far stranger then a man in a suit or a realistic take? I don't know. I'm just spit balling.

This is a cool illustration of a three headed dragon, though. The bifurcated tail and birdy expression(s?) are a nice touch. :)

Asher, I don't think is quite that. Consider Avatar's xenobiology...I think a working knowledge of biology and science can help: thinking of different ways that creatures would evolve on other worlds.
