Description

permanent marker 2006,
Drawing of a Gefreiter (lance corporal) from Königlich Preussisches Jägerbataillon Nr. 27 somewhere on the Riga-front (in Latvia) in 1916.
27th was formed from Finnish volunteers, who had gone to Germany to get military training, being ready for the independent Finland's own army. This is known in Finland as "jääkäriliike".
Our soldier here is armed with Gewehr 98 rifle and a stick grenade. Also notice the jäger headgear, shako, instead of pickelhaube (the famous German spiked helmet). Steel helmet, Stahlhelm started to appear from 1916 onwards.

More information can be found for instance here.
Together with Squad leader, this illustration goes to July MGWAT titled "Then and Now", in Great War Forum.
